JAMES DASHCUND

Stories are told, sometimes in just a snippet of time.

I tend to play with images creating a conversation, a conversation that with each stroke, random mark and collaged item changes. The image evolves - regresses - evolves until an understanding is reached. Trying to leave an open ended image as to let the viewer insert their own history and experiences to the mix.

Syntax - Semantics

Language, written or visual is simply a way to communicate with each other. Words can invoke images just as images invoke words.

It was from a trip to Paris where I had started to take (admittedly bad) photos of graffiti covered posters. Interested in my response to images, a language I did not know (well) and the graffiti. It became a visual game. Trying to figure out what they were saying and what the question was in the first place.

I started exploring the interplay of Images and Words. The juxtaposition of each element invoking a different response from the viewer as to their placement in the image moved. Collage was the fastest way to explore this quest. Adding paint, ink, pencil and scraps of earlier work brought a personal element. I try to leave my images open-ended. Letting the viewer bring their own history in to play to figure out the question. Hopefully finding a different way to see.

Coming from a background of realism, playing with POP Art & Abstract Expressionism in the 60’s, I became interested in trying to combine all styles in my own way, Abstract Realism came about.

Having an inquisitive mind and being a voracious reader, visual word play and symbolism evolved in my work. In trying to initiate a dialogue with the viewer the marks of the creative process became as important as the image. Seducing  the viewer with a visual pleasing and engaging surface. The juxtaposition of objects, movement and marks to involve ones subconscious in an inner dialogue.

Consciously leaving an open ended image to allow the viewers history to add to the impact of the image, and hopefully an ever changing response.
